As spring arrives, so do common colds characterized by sneezes, nasal congestion, and the ongoing “dosing dilemma” relating to over-the-counter cold treatments and antibiotics.

Have you thought about the significance of proper medication dosing for children of all ages?

How do you determine an adequate dose?

Consider the following essential tips when faced with this question:

  1. Consult your local pharmacist. Provide the child’s age and weight, as dosage may change based on these factors. Additionally, be aware of other medications your child is currently taking.
  2. Review the packaging. If you are using an over-the-counter medication your doctor recommended, confirm the dosage instructions on the box or bottle. Ensure you have accurate information regarding weight and age before administering any medication.
  3. Avoid using household utensils like teaspoons for measurement. Instead, utilize a syringe, oral dropper, dosing spoon, or measurement cup that clearly indicates volume for greater accuracy.
  4. Do not mix medications, including herbal treatments, unless instructed by a healthcare professional. If your child exhibits multiple symptoms, look for a medication that addresses all concerns. Combining different medications without guidance can lead to adverse reactions.

Are you aware that two children of the same size and age can respond quite differently to the same prescribed amount of medicine?

Children’s Mercy is dedicated to enhancing our understanding of how factors such as genetics, development, illnesses, and environmental influences can impact medication responses in children. Their aim is to perfect medicine administration, akin to the “Goldilocks” principle of getting it “just right.” Each staff member is equipped with knowledge tailored for pediatric care, which encompasses determining the correct dose, frequency, and treatment plan for any medicine. From addressing leukemia to treating a simple cold, the effectiveness of dosing is vital for healthcare providers and parents alike.

Presently, Children’s Mercy is developing the GOLDILOKs platform which assists healthcare providers in pinpointing appropriate dosages for conditions such as leukemia and ADHD, as well as other medical issues. By integrating patient medical histories, this platform offers real-time results, which allows doctors to simulate doses based on the desired outcomes for each patient. This methodology is also being applied in cardiology, asthma treatments, and more. For additional details about GOLDILOKs, you can visit this link.

When my niece and nephews are home sick, they tend to stay with me since their parents are at work. I always verify the dosages of any medications. OTC medications can be quite strong, after all.
