Staying Ahead of the Flu #CMHMoms

Every season has its own charm, but for me, Fall is the standout. I relish the refreshing drop in temperature that follows the sweltering summer days. There’s something truly special about snuggling into jeans and cozy sweatshirts. The transition into Autumn is one I eagerly anticipate. And I can’t overlook the stunning transformations of leaves, which turn vivid colors and then scatter to the ground, providing my kids with endless opportunities to make leaf piles!

On the other hand, the season I dread? Flu Season.  Unfortunately, in Missouri, flu season has arrived, and cases are multiplying rapidly. According to Children’s Mercy, weekly reports of flu cases nearly doubled throughout September. As a precaution, healthcare professionals are advising everyone aged six months and older to receive a flu vaccination this year. The flu can present serious risks, particularly for children aged five and under, with those under two being especially vulnerable. Family members in these age brackets should also be vaccinated.

Staying ahead of the flu is crucial, and several preventive measures are recommended by the CDC. This year, they endorse the flu shot over the nasal spray vaccine. Additionally, implementing the following practices can help keep the flu at bay:

  • Frequently wash hands.
  • Cough/sneeze into tissues or your elbow.
  • Ensure you’re getting adequate rest.
  • Incorporate foods with live cultures (like yogurt, fresh fruits, and vegetables) into your diet.
  • Consider taking a probiotic.
  • Avoid nail-biting.
  • Sanitize commonly shared items.

I really need to get on the ball & get my shot! As a diabetic, if I get the flu, it takes twice as long to get over it.

I’m almost obsessive about hand-washing, but I hate having the flu.

We haven’t had the flu but we had a weeks-long virus here, and my husband ended up with pneumonia as a secondary infection. It really took a lot out of us, and I can’t imagine being hit with the flu this year too.
